Quick Answer

Have drawings ready? Send the latest drawings and specifications, any available BOQ or member schedule, the project location and required delivery terms for a fabrication review.

Production information still incomplete? Send what is available and identify the outstanding decisions so the missing inputs can be reviewed first. Any further engineering or detailing scope must be confirmed separately; an initial review is not a fabrication release.

Before production, the drawing revision, material requirements, connection details, surface treatment, inspection scope and packing requirements must be confirmed. Fabrication begins from drawings and specifications confirmed for production.

Is Your Project Ready for Fabrication?

Buyers usually arrive at this service at one of three stages. Understanding which stage applies helps clarify what can move forward and what must be confirmed separately.

A. Fabrication-ready — Confirmed fabrication or shop drawings and specifications are available. Member schedules, connection details, material requirements and surface treatment are sufficiently defined to review for production.

B. Engineering or detailing still required — Structural design exists, but production information is incomplete. Additional detailing, connection information or drawing coordination may be needed before fabrication release. If further detailing or engineering coordination is required, that scope should be confirmed separately before fabrication begins.

C. Early concept stage — Only architectural or preliminary information exists. In this case, the project is not yet ready for structural steel fabrication. A broader project workflow may be required first.

For stages B and C, the engineering and detailing scope should be confirmed separately before fabrication release.

What Structural Steel Components Can Be Fabricated?

Bingfa can fabricate primary structural steel members, columns, beams and rafters, secondary steel members where included, bracing, connection plates and related components, and other project-specific fabricated steel members. The exact component list depends on the confirmed drawings and the agreed supply scope.

Project-specific membersCustom details, interface dimensions, special requirementsDrawing completeness, production feasibility, agreed scope

No member dimensions, steel grades or tolerance values are stated here as universal requirements. Production information must come from the confirmed drawings and specifications.

What Information Must Be Confirmed Before Fabrication?

Before fabrication begins, the following information should be confirmed for the project:

  • Latest drawing revision
  • Member schedule or BOQ
  • Material specification
  • Connection details and hole positions
  • Member marks and identification system
  • Surface treatment requirement
  • Quantity or tonnage if known
  • Inspection and documentation requirements
  • Packing requirements
  • Delivery and trade term

The more complete this information is, the more accurately the fabrication scope and quotation can be prepared. If some details are not yet confirmed, the available information can still be reviewed first, and missing items can be identified for follow-up.

From Confirmed Drawings to Fabricated Members

Fabrication follows a commercial sequence based on confirmed production information. The process may include production-information review, material preparation, cutting, drilling, assembly, welding, surface treatment where specified, member identification, inspection and release for packing. The exact stages depend on the member type, drawing requirements, specifications and agreed supply scope.

This is a commercial overview. It is not a welding textbook, and it does not prescribe welding procedures, tolerances or inspection standards. Those requirements must come from the confirmed drawings, specifications and project documentation.

Quality Checks Before Packing

Quality checks are carried out according to the confirmed project requirements. Buyer-relevant checks may include dimensions, hole positions, connection details, fabrication condition, surface condition where applicable, and member identification. The actual inspection scope must depend on the drawings, specifications, contract and confirmed project requirements.

No fixed tolerances, NDT plans or inspection certificate packages are promised here. The inspection and documentation scope should be confirmed for each project.

Before production, use our steel fabrication dimensional tolerance guide to clarify measurement datums, permitted deviations, mating interfaces and inspection records for the specified work.

Use the structural steel inspection and test plan guide to agree inspection stages, responsibilities, hold points and required records before production.

If you have drawings, a member schedule or BOQ, steel specification, coating requirement, quantity information and destination ready, send them for a fabrication and supply-scope review. If some details are not yet confirmed, the available information can still be reviewed first.

Surface Treatment According to Project Specification

Surface treatment must follow the confirmed project requirements. Depending on the specification and agreed scope, this may include primer, a paint system, galvanizing where available and agreed, or another specified finish. The selected treatment, coating system and inspection requirements should be confirmed before production.

Bingfa does not prescribe one default coating system for every project. The surface treatment requirement should be confirmed from the drawings, specifications and project documentation before fabrication.

Member Identification, Packing and Export Preparation

Member marking, grouping, packing and shipment preparation are coordinated according to the confirmed supply scope. Member identification helps distinguish fabricated components before packing and dispatch. Packing methods depend on the member type, quantity, transport conditions and agreed delivery requirements.

For detailed export packing and container-loading methodology, refer to Steel Structure & Sandwich Panel Container Loading Guide. This page does not repeat that detailed guide.

What Can Be Included in a Structural Steel Fabrication Quotation?

A fabrication quotation can cover different scope levels. The table below explains the possible supply status and what must be confirmed for each item.

Table 2: Fabrication Quotation Scope

Container-loading preparationAccording to confirmed project scopeLoading plan, packing list, shipment preparation
FreightDepends on the agreed trade termNamed place or port, logistics responsibility, included charges
Site erectionSeparate unless expressly includedProject location, contract scope, site responsibility, local arrangements

No blanket inclusion is promised. Each item should be confirmed for the specific project scope.

EXW, FOB and CIF: Confirm the Commercial Boundary

The trade term changes the quotation and logistics boundary. EXW, FOB and CIF use different commercial and logistics boundaries, so the named handover point or port and the responsibilities included in the quotation should be stated clearly.

A structural steel fabrication quotation should not be assumed to include freight, customs clearance, destination delivery, unloading or site erection unless those items are expressly included in the agreed scope. The specific logistics responsibility should be confirmed in the quotation and contract.

Real Export Supply Reference: Venezuela

For reference, Bingfa supplied a four-workshop steel structure package for a project in Venezuela. The combined project area was 8,964 m². The engineering basis was client-provided drawings. The recorded steel quantity was approximately 550 t. Sandwich panels were also included in the confirmed supply scope. The shipment quantity was 31 containers under EXW terms. Under the EXW arrangement, the customer handled onward logistics after handover. Site installation, ocean freight, customs clearance and destination delivery were outside Bingfa’s confirmed scope for this project. For more details, see 8,964 m² four-workshop steel structure supply project for Venezuela.

Fabrication Supply vs Complete Steel Building Service

Fabrication supply is intended for buyers who already have a sufficiently defined project package and need structural steel components manufactured. The buyer provides the confirmed drawings and specifications, and Bingfa fabricates, checks, marks, packs and prepares the components for export.

A complete steel building service is broader. It may include additional project coordination, engineering review, building envelope scope and other services beyond component fabrication. For the complete service workflow, refer to Steel Building Services. For workshop-building planning and supply, refer to Steel Structure Workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can Bingfa fabricate structural steel from client-provided drawings?

Yes, when the drawings and specifications are sufficiently confirmed for production. The drawing revision, member schedule, material requirements, connection details and inspection scope should be confirmed before fabrication release. If further detailing or engineering coordination is required, that scope should be confirmed separately.

2. What drawings are needed before steel fabrication begins?

Fabrication typically requires confirmed shop or fabrication drawings, member schedules, connection details and specifications. Architectural drawings alone are not always sufficient to start fabrication. The production basis should be confirmed before the fabrication release.

3. Can surface treatment be included?

Surface treatment can be included according to the confirmed project scope. The required treatment — primer, paint system, galvanizing or another finish — must follow the project specification. The coating system and inspection requirements should be confirmed before fabrication.

4. Can sandwich panels be supplied with fabricated steel?

Sandwich panels can be supplied when included in the confirmed project scope. The panel type, specification, quantity and packing requirements should be confirmed separately. Panel supply is not automatically included in every structural steel fabrication quotation.

5. Are packing and container loading included?

Packing and container-loading preparation can be included according to the confirmed project scope. The packing method, marking, protection requirements and loading plan should be confirmed before shipment. Detailed packing and loading methodology is covered in the Container Loading Guide.
