Why Does Paint Peel Off Your Steel Structure?

Why Does Paint Peel Off Your Steel Structure? How Shot Blasting Improves Paint Adhesion & Corrosion Resistance
Many buyers of steel structure and structural steel products face the same problem: The paint starts to peel, fade, or rust after only a few years. The real reason is not the paint—it’s the surface preparation before painting. At our factory, we follow a strict process for all steel structure fabrication and high quality steel structures: First shot blasting, then painting. This is the key to better paint adhesion, longer service life, and stronger corrosion resistance.
What Is Shot Blasting & Why It Matters for Paint Adhesion
We prepare our steel parts by cleaning them in a machine blasting with steel shot (grit) before applying paint.
This process does three important jobs:
1、Cleans all rust, mill scale, dust and oil from the surface of the steel.
2、Cleans creates a rough, uniform texture which allows the paint to stick very well to the steel.
3、Meets international standards (Sa 2.5) with respect to how clean the steel surface is.
If we do not shot blast the steel, the paint will not be able to stick and will just lay on top.
With shot blasting, paint bonds into the steel.
That’s why our structural steel products have much better paint adhesion.
Our Process: Shot Blasting → Painting → Longer Lasting Steel Structures
We now apply paint directly onto the unpainted steel.
The standard production process used is:
1、Steel Cutting and Forming (S/F)
2、Full Shot Blasting (FSB)
3、Application of Epoxy Primer (EPR)
4、Application of Intermediate Coat (IC)
5、Application of Top Coat (TC)
This coating system will produce a paint that is:
· Not easy to peel
· Not easy to rust
· Last much longer
· More corrosion-resistant
For prefabricated steel structure, steel structure warehouse, and steel structure workshop projects, this process ensures your building stays protected for decades.
Major Advantages of Shot Blasting + Professional Painting
1、Better paint adhesion
Paint sticks firmly to the steel, not easy to peel or fall off.
2、Longer service life
Coating lasts 2–3 times longer than normal unpainted steel.
3、Better corrosion resistance
Protects against rain, humidity, and salt air—especially important for overseas projects.
Why Most Steel Structures Fail Early (The Pain Point Clients Hate)
Many factories skip shot blasting to save cost.
The result:
Paint peels quickly
Rust appears in 1–3 years
Clients spend more money on maintenance and repainting
If you want your steel building and structural steel products to stay durable, you must use shot blasting before painting.
Conclusion: Invest in Proper Surface Prep for Long-Lasting Steel Structures
When it comes to steel structure corrosion protection, there are no shortcuts. The best way to ensure exceptional paint adhesion, long coating life, and superior anti-corrosion performance is to follow our proven process: shot blast first, then apply a professional multi-layer coating.
we have over 15 years of experience in steel structure fabrication and export high quality steel structures to customers around the world. Every prefabricated steel structure, steel structure warehouse, and steel structure workshop we produce undergoes our strict shot blasting and painting process to ensure it delivers reliable performance for decades.
