Sandwich panels can arrive in acceptable condition and still need attention before they are installed. A delayed installation, a partly opened bundle or water found under wrapping creates a new condition to record and resolve. The useful question is not simply whether the delivery was accepted, but whether the identified panels remain suitable for the next planned operation.
This guide covers site storage after delivery and before installation. Use it with the instructions for the actual supplied product, not as a universal handling method for EPS, PU/PIR or rock wool panels. The steel building delivery inspection checklist covers receiving records; the checks below follow the material through the storage period.
Plan the Storage Area and Retrieval Sequence Before Arrival
Identify a firm, stable storage area with suitable drainage and access. Coordinate the support arrangement with the supplier’s instructions and the actual bundles. Keep material clear of standing water, traffic impacts and nearby operations that could contaminate or damage it. A convenient unloading point is not necessarily a suitable storage location for the full waiting period.
Map bundles to the roof or wall areas where they will be used. Arrange access so that early installation packages do not require unnecessary movement of later ones. Keep identification readable and record any change of storage location. Confirm who checks the area, who records issues and who contacts the supplier.
Before delivery, request the applicable storage instructions and their revision: permitted support positions, whether stacking is allowed, any stack limit, weather protection, ventilation and storage-duration conditions. Do not substitute rules from another panel manufacturer’s manual. This checklist does not authorize roof storage or establish lifting points, equipment capacities or temporary structural loads; those require the appropriate site and engineering arrangements.
Check Unopened Bundles Without Assuming the Wrapping Is Weatherproof
Record the arrival date, bundle identification, panel type and intended installation sequence. Check accessible packaging and supports for tears, displacement, trapped water or signs of impact. Compare current conditions with the receiving record so that a new issue is not confused with one already reported.
Transport wrapping is not proof of suitability for indefinite outdoor storage. Follow the product instructions for keeping, opening or adapting packaging, and for the required cover and ventilation. Do not apply a blanket rule to keep every bundle sealed until installation or to slit every package on arrival. If the instructions do not address the actual conditions, request clarification before changing the protection arrangement.
Check again after relevant weather events, nearby construction activity or movement of the bundles, and at the intervals agreed for the site. Record what was observed rather than signing a general statement that all material is undamaged.
Distinguish Packaging, Facing Film and Joint Materials
- Transport outer packaging: wrapping, covers and packaging components associated with the bundle. Their condition and suitability for site storage must be checked separately from the panels.
- Peelable facing film: a temporary film on a metal face, where supplied. Confirm its purpose, removal stage and deadline for the specific product and exposure conditions. Do not assume it can remain indefinitely or use another manufacturer’s time limit.
- Joint seals and product-specific protective layers: these may include permanent functional materials as well as specifically identified temporary protection. Do not peel off, cut away or disturb a joint material simply because it resembles packaging.
Identify each layer from the supplied documentation before deciding what to remove. Different core materials, facings and joint systems do not automatically share the same requirements. The sandwich panel materials overview helps identify the product category, but it does not replace product-specific storage instructions.
Protect the Remainder After a Bundle Is Partly Opened
Record when the bundle was opened, what was removed and which panels remain. Recheck the remaining supports, exposed edges and protection arrangement against the applicable instructions. Preserve the link between the remaining panels and their original package reference, even if material must be relocated.
Confirm how to protect the remainder from weather, contamination and displacement while maintaining the specified ventilation. Simply closing the original wrapping may trap moisture or no longer provide the intended protection. Do not improvise a universal rewrapping method. Assign someone to check the partly opened bundle before the next shift or installation release, as appropriate to the site’s work plan.
Record Moisture or Damage and Obtain a Disposition
If standing water, damp packaging, suspected moisture ingress, distorted edges or damaged facing is found, identify the affected bundles and observable area. Take dated photographs, record the location and describe the condition without guessing its cause or hidden extent. Distinguish what was seen from what remains inaccessible or unconfirmed.
Mark and segregate affected material from material available for installation, using a safe site arrangement. Request the supplier’s assessment and any necessary technical review. Keep the reported issue, response, agreed action and responsible person together in the record. Further inspection, acceptance, replacement or another disposition depends on the actual findings and applicable requirements.
Dry-looking surfaces do not, by themselves, establish that a wet panel is suitable for installation. Equally, one affected package does not prove that an entire shipment must be discarded. Do not install suspect material while its disposition is unresolved, or carry out an unapproved site repair. Cost, responsibility and any claim should be addressed under the project agreement rather than assumed from this checklist.
Recheck the Plan When Installation Is Delayed
Compare the revised installation date with the product’s storage conditions and facing-film requirements. Record elapsed storage time, changes in exposure, package openings and previous incidents. A delay should prompt a new condition check, not an automatic extension of the original storage arrangement.
Ask the supplier to clarify any conditions the original instructions do not cover. Confirm the next review date, pending actions and who is responsible for them. Do not treat a general email acknowledging the delay as technical approval to keep or use affected material.
Storage and Pre-Installation Handover Checklist
Use a record for each bundle or clearly identified group in the same condition. Complete the entries below and attach photographs or correspondence by reference. Mark unresolved items as pending; an empty field is not approval.
| Check Point | Details to Record | Record / Owner / Status |
|---|---|---|
| Bundle and product identity | Package reference, panel type and core, quantity, arrival date and intended installation area. | References: ___ Checked by / date: ___ |
| Instructions and storage area | Product document revision; location, drainage, support and permitted stacking arrangement; cover and ventilation conditions. | Document / location: ___ Conformity or open question: ___ Owner: ___ |
| Packaging and protective layers | Unopened or partly opened status; remaining quantity; outer packaging, facing film and joint protection identified separately. | Condition / opening date: ___ Applicable removal instruction: ___ Owner: ___ |
| Observed issue | Water, moisture, packaging damage, face or edge damage; affected extent and photograph references. | Observation / date: ___ Affected material: ___ Recorded by: ___ |
| Action and pending decision | Identification or segregation record, supplier notification, response, agreed action and outstanding technical question. | Action / reference: ___ Pending item: ___ Responsible person: ___ |
| Delay and recheck | Revised installation date, elapsed storage period, changed exposure, instruction limits and next review. | Recheck result / date: ___ Next action / owner: ___ |
| Installation handover | Panels and quantity released; condition check; resolved or outstanding issues; disposition reference and recipients. | Release or hold: ___ Confirmed by / date: ___ Installer acknowledgement: ___ |
For a project discussion, provide the panel type, quantities, destination, expected waiting period and available product documentation. Confirm the agreed supply scope and the storage information needed before placing the order.
Confirm Condition Before Release to Installation
Match the panels being issued to the intended installation area and current layout. Check accessible faces, edges, joints and identification, together with the storage record and any supplier disposition. Communicate unresolved restrictions to the installation supervisor; releasing unaffected panels does not release every panel in the same delivery.
Record who confirmed the release, its scope and the documents handed over. The sandwich roof panel installation guide addresses the next stage of coordination. A storage handover is not a substitute for the installation method, engineering checks or product-specific assembly instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can sandwich panels be stored before installation?
Use the conditions and time limits for the actual supplied product, including any separate facing-film deadline. Site exposure and changes in packaging also matter. Where the planned delay is not covered, obtain supplier clarification rather than assuming a universal storage period.
Should all protective film be removed when panels arrive?
No universal rule applies. First distinguish outer packaging from peelable facing film and functional joint materials. Follow the relevant instructions for each item; permanent seals or coatings are not disposable wrapping.
Can rain-affected panels be installed after drying?
Drying alone does not establish suitability. Record and identify the affected material, keep it out of installation pending the required assessment, and obtain a documented disposition. The decision should address the actual product and condition, not an assumption about the whole shipment.
Who should confirm the pre-installation handover?
The project’s designated storage and installation representatives should record the condition and release status. Supplier or specialist decisions on reported issues must be referenced where required. This coordination does not assign warranty, compensation or contractual liability by itself.
A useful panel enquiry includes the project location, roof or wall application, quantities, delivery sequence and anticipated storage conditions. Discuss the agreed enclosure supply and applicable documentation early so the site team can plan protection before the panels arrive.
